DAVID FRANCEY Releases New Album MAPS – A Collection of Fan Favourites, Personal Picks, and a Brand-New Track

Cover Art Beth Girdler

One of Canada’s most beloved folk voices, David Francey, has
released MAPS, a new album that looks back on a songwriting journey spanning
more than five decades. This poignant and powerful collection draws from
both fan favourites and the songs most meaningful to Francey himself, and
includes one brand-new track, “Corpus Christi.”

Born in Ayrshire, Scotland, David Francey immigrated to Canada at age 12 and
spent decades working as a rail yard worker, carpenter, and labourer-singing
and writing songs as he went. Encouraged by his wife to share his music
later in life, he released his first album at age 45. Since then, his deeply
human storytelling and strikingly honest songwriting have earned him
international acclaim.

“I have been writing songs for more than 50 years,” says Francey. “Each song
is a map that helped me navigate through the ups and downs life put in my
way. I’d have been lost without them.”

This special project was born from a simple but powerful idea: David asked
fans to share their favourite Francey songs. The resulting selections –
combined with the tracks that have charted his own course – form the
emotional and musical backbone of MAPS.

Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter, often
described as “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto
Star). Since releasing his debut album Torn Screen Door in 1999, Francey has
become a fixture on the folk music scene, known for his unflinching honesty,
poetic songwriting, and deep reverence for everyday life.

With four JUNO Awards, numerous international accolades, and songs covered
by artists such as The Del McCoury Band, The Rankin Family, James Keelaghan,
and Tracy Grammer, Francey’s influence stretches far beyond Canadian
borders.

In MAPS, listeners will find stories of the working class, the quiet beauty
of the natural world, and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a
tribute to a life spent observing, listening, and translating experience
into song.

Francey lives in the Lanark Highlands of Ontario with his wife, artist Beth
Girdler. Their home remains a place of quiet reflection, creative
inspiration, and frequent visits from their children and grandchildren.
