On Tuesday, September 27th, live at Bar Cathedral (54 The Esplanade), The Magnettes are performing a free show at 10:00pm to launch the new global initiative EuroCan. Industry professionals and true music fans are expected to attend in celebration of the new initiative and to experience the transformative blending of cultures. Spark Houston, one of Canada’s most promising and exciting rap talents and The Magnettes, Sweden’s brash, beautiful, feminist punk icons are sure to own the stage.
This pop-trio was founded in Pajala, Sweden and speak the language Meänkieli, which was forbidden in Sweden and was not recognized until 1999. The Magnettes incorporate parts of Meänkieli into their songs. They crafted their own blend of electro-pop and riot grrrl punk. In 2015, they performed at SXSW in Austin, TX and signed with the label Digsin, where their debut album Ugly Youth was released in 2017. Their single “Young & Wild” premiered on prime-time TV and became the 10 most played Swedish song on Swedish radio the same year.
The Magnettes have been praised by sites and tastemakers like Earmilk, Perez Hilton, Elle Sweden and played on festivals like Eurosonic, Tallin Music Week, Golden Melody Awards, CMW, Future Echoes, Lilla By Festivalen and the world’s largest festival Summerfest.
They are favorites in the LBGTQIA+ community and has played on over 15 Pride Festivals in Europe and wrote the official theme for Pride in North of Sweden this year.
Their single “Shakes” garnered The Magnettes attention in Canada, as the retro-rock-loving musicians look to Blondie and Carole Pope for inspiration. With their commercial hooks combed with raunchy lyrics and a dance-choreographed stage show, this show in Toronto is one not to miss.
An exclusive show in Toronto is the warm-up as they head to BreakOut West in Calgary, Alberta, for two shows:
Friday, September 30 at 8:45pm-9:15pmThe GRAND (Lobby)
and
Saturday, October 1 at 10:15pm-10:45pm at The Unicorn (Basement).
Through a groundbreaking collaboration between Canada and Europe, EuroCan is proud to announce the beginning of a new frontier in live music, where cultural bridges are built, and new opportunities are created for artists of all backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and gender ideologies.
